This is a slightly different question to "why isn't my business showing up on Google," even though the two get asked in almost the same breath. Showing up is about rankings. Traffic is about whether any of that visibility is actually turning into people landing on your site. It's entirely possible to have one without the other.
Your Pages Might Not Be Indexed At All
Before anything else, it's worth checking whether Google has actually indexed your pages. According to Ahrefs' large-scale study of nearly 14 billion webpages, a page that isn't indexed simply can't rank, and the most common cause is a rogue setting somewhere on the site quietly telling search engines not to index a page at all. It happens more often than people expect, particularly after a redesign or migration where a setting gets carried over by accident.
You Might Be Ranking for the Wrong Things
A page can rank perfectly well and still get no traffic, if nobody's actually searching for the term it ranks for. That same Ahrefs research found that 96.55% of pages get zero organic traffic from Google overall, and low search volume for the target topic is one of the main reasons. Ranking first place for a phrase almost nobody types into Google still adds up to almost nobody visiting.
This is a common trap for a new blog or service page, written around a topic that matters to the business but not necessarily around what customers are actually searching.
Nobody's Linking to You
The same study found that 66% of pages with zero traffic also had zero backlinks, meaning no other website links to them at all. Backlinks remain one of the clearest trust signals Google uses, and a site with none is starting from a real disadvantage compared with one that's been mentioned, referenced or linked to elsewhere.
For a local business, this often comes from things that have nothing to do with the website directly: being listed in local directories, getting mentioned by other Sheffield businesses or organisations, or simply being active and visible enough that people naturally reference you.
You're Ranking, But Nobody's Clicking
Sometimes the ranking itself is fine and the problem sits one step earlier, in whether the search result actually looks worth clicking. A vague page title or a meta description that doesn't say anything useful can leave a page sitting on page one while people click a competitor's result instead.
This is often the quickest thing to fix, since it doesn't require new content or new links, just a more specific and honest description of what's actually on the page.
Sorting Out Which Problem You Actually Have
These are genuinely different problems with different fixes, which is exactly why "why isn't my business showing up on Google" and "why isn't my website getting traffic" aren't quite the same question. If you're not appearing in results at all, that's worth working through the reasons we've covered in why your business isn't showing up on Google first. If you are appearing but the visits aren't converting into enquiries once people land, that's a different issue again, one we've covered in why your website isn't converting.
For a Sheffield business trying to work out which of these applies, the honest answer is usually found by actually looking at the data, not guessing. Search Console will show whether pages are indexed and what they're ranking for. Analytics will show whether traffic is arriving at all.
